Last year, more than 90 IRS trained and certified volunteers helped 3,018 Quad Citians prepare their income taxes free of charge, bringing back $3.44 million in refunds and saving $777,000 in filing fees through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax Aide programs.
Since 2020, VITA and AARP Tax Aide have returned $19.3 million in refunds to local families.
“For many individuals and families in the Quad Cities, a tax refund isn’t a bonus, it’s a lifeline,” said Max Bigalk, United Way Quad Cities VITA Coordinator. “Through VITA, we help people file their taxes accurately and claim the tax credits they’ve earned, including credits that support working parents and families with children, so they can afford basics like housing, food, childcare, and utilities to build greater financial stability for the months ahead.”
