Every day is truly a learning opportunity for our youngest community members. And it’s an opportunity we’re excited to help parents and children make the most out of.
When we give young children in our community a strong start, we lay the foundation that serves them in school and sets them up for success throughout their life. Together, with our partners, we fund initiatives that support child development and early childhood education in our community.
Research shows that high-quality early childhood education improves children’s cognitive abilities and emotional development and builds a foundation for lifelong learning. It also makes learning outcomes more equitable, reduces poverty and improves social mobility.

Children grow and learn at a remarkable rate from the day they’re born. During this critical time of development, United Way provides resources for parents and caregivers to help young minds thrive.

Get ready to lace up and learn! Our Born Learning Trails program takes you across several trails in Scott County and Rock Island County. They include fun games or activities posted on aluminum signs along the way for a unique educational experience within the great outdoors.
Activities include counting the number of flowers or colors nearby, hopscotch and identifying shapes, colors and various images painted on the ground.
There is no handbook for parenting, but United Way offers the next best thing.
We help parents turn everyday moments into learning experiences. Our free six-week workshops are designed to help parents prepare children ages 5 and younger for success in kindergarten and beyond.
Parent workshops helped nearly 200 local parents to be more effective and take an active role in their child’s development. 82% of children whose parents participated in these workshops entered kindergarten ready.
