Kids United

When you support Kids United, you’re the hero.

Too many kids struggle with literacy in the Quad Cities. But, we’re uniting new friends and long-time partners across the Quad Cities to improve youth literacy and empower kids.

Join our Kids United campaign to provide 3,000 copies of the new book “The Adventures of Kids United: The Glass Bridge” to all local second graders and power United Way programming that’s activating reading mentors and creating measurable success toward boosting youth literacy.

"The Adventures of Kids United: The Glass Bridge"

“The Adventures of Kids United: The Glass Bridge,” written by our United Way QC president and CEO, Rene Gellerman, invites young readers to discover their potential to create change. In this story, five Quad Cities friends unlock their own “superpowers” — the qualities that make them unique — as they tackle challenges using teamwork, creativity and kindness. The book encourages kids to believe in themselves and see their strengths as tools for building a better community.

Proceeds from every book support United Way QC’s literacy programs, making it possible for more kids to develop the skills and confidence to thrive.

The Power of Literacy

When you’re a kid, your ability to read proficiently is basically a superpower — it’s essential for your success. And when you can read by third grade, your odds of keeping up in school and graduating on time improve significantly.

  • 75% of students who are poor readers in third grade will continue to struggle with reading through high school.
  • 74% of students who fall behind in reading by third grade will never catch up to their peers.
  • Only 44% of Quad Cities third graders are reading proficiently, placing our community 13% below the regional average.

United Way literacy programs have been proven to help. Check out this blog post to learn more about the lasting impact literacy creates for kids in the Quad Cities.
